Spot: Canopy Tower Ecolodge
Zone: rain forest, canal zone, tropics
The Good Stuff:
This is where you feel like you’re living among the clouds. There’s nothing like being right in the rainforest and waking up to the morning rush hour of nature – birds of every tropical species imaginable at their most active time of day. Just outside your bedroom window the rainforest and all its wonders await.
This is life in the treetops. The Canopy Tower Eco-lodge is like no other place. It is a converted radio tower that was used by the United States Air Force in defense of the Panama Canal. There are five levels all with different views of the tree canopy, the Panama Canal and the city skyline in the distance. The top floor is used as the dining area with panoramic windows all around. Where else could you share your habitat with that of howler monkeys, toucans and blue morpho butterflies?
What we love: waking up to a symphony of birdcalls OR living in the trees
Green Cred:
Reduces Reuses Recycles – everything!
- Conserves water and electricity
- Greywater is reused to water gardens
- Organic waste is composted and reused in the gardens
- Marble floors were salvaged and deck chairs made from salvaged wood
- Wood in rooms is from sustainably managed plantations
- Knowing transportation causes extra emissions, the lodge uses public transport whenever they can.

Above and Beyond:
The iron structure and wooden decking on the outdoor deck are recycled from the old Panama Railway's rails and ties - the world's first transcontinental railroad! Now that’s re-use in action!
