Spot: Hotel Cocibolca
Zone: Colonial city
The Good Stuff:
If history is what you’re looking for, imagine being transported back in time to the early 1500s. Granada is considered to be one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Central America. It also happens to be on the shores of one of the biggest lakes in the world, Lake Nicaragua – or Colcibolca – the word for “lake” in the local indigenous language Náhuatl.
Hotel Cocibolca prides itself on being Granadian and family-owned providing that special Nicaraguan friendly service. It is a new hotel, in a conserved colonial-style building – giving you the best of both worlds. All the rooms have air conditioning and television and there is internet and a small private outdoor pool and gardens. It’s also in the center of town so there’s time to get out and dance – no visit to Latin America is complete without dancing (even if you’re just watching!).
What we love: Chatting with the Grenadian people in the nearby markets
Green Cred:
- It’s all in the family
- They’ve conserved a beautiful historic building rather than build something new in its place
