Do something a little different with your beach and jungle vacation this year. Nicaragua, a relatively undiscovered tropical country of active, fiery volcanoes and lakes supporting age-old cultures, also boasts wildlife wonders like monkeys, macaws and an occasional jaguar. Every corner of the country is steeped in colonial or indigenous history, where locals are eager to show you around, volcanoes rumble, and the lakes each have their story to tell. Secluded beaches accentuate the natural beauty in a an undisturbed environment.

Day 1: Welcome to Nicaragua!

Your first stop is the colonial city of Leon, where you’re taken back in time as you enter the town and its rich colonial architectural of churches and houses, where the presence of the Spanish conquistadors will always be felt.

Day 2: A Plethora of Wildlife in the Mangroves and Leon City Tour

Juan Venado Island National Reserve, one of the most protected areas in Nicaragua, is located just 25 outside Leon. Explore the mangroves of this island by kayak, while spotting many species of birds and mammals, and learning with your private guide about the sensitive life of this ecosystem. Around lunch time, find that perfect spot for a picnic lunch, with the Pacific Ocean and the natural sounds of the jungle as your background.
Discover the charms of the colonial León on a walking tour, including visits to the famous Cathedral, (largest in Central America), the Bishop’s Palace and the Ruben Dario Museum. Wrap up your day with a magnificent sunset view over the city of Leon.

Day 3: Hiking the Cerro Negro Volcano

Driving through the country side, reach the base of the Cerro Negro Volcano. The black hill rises a total 2214 ft above sea level, forming as a result of the Cocos plate subducting under the Caribbean plate, making it one of the youngest volcanoes in Central America. Your ascent on foot winds along rocky paths and past fumaroles as you reach the top. The peak rewards you with panoramic views of the Maribios Volcanic Chain, where the Telica and the Cristo Rey cones stand.

How do you get down? Good question. You may choose just to run, jog, walk or even roll down the slope. But for the most adventurous, grab a sand board and point straight down!

Day 4: Granada City Tour and Volcanic Islands

Walk the narrow and picturesque streets of colonial Granada, with stops at the Cathedral, The Merced Church Tower, the Casa de Los Tres Mundos and the San Francisco Convent, home to a large pre-Columbian collection.

Jump in a boat across the waters of Lake Nicaragua to the out-of-the-way luxury of Jicaro Island Ecolodge. Located on one of the volcanic private islands on Lake Nicaragua, surrounded by fairy-tale lush vegetation, the Mombacho Volcano and the Zapatera Island.

Day 5: Mombacho Volcano Hike

The adventure begins with a 4x4 ride to the base of the Mombacho Volcano. Once at the top of the volcano in the misty cloud forest, visit the biological station to learn more about this unique ecosystem. Explore one of a variety of trails through dense vegetation with trees covered by orchids and bromeliads. Expansive views of Lake Nicaragua and the islands – try to point out Jicaro from there!

Day 6: Explore Jicaro Island

Your day is spent kayaking the waters of Lake Nicaragua and exploring the isletas, hiking or just laying by the pool with a good book to read.

Day 7: Nicaragua Beach Time

Time to go to the beach! Gigante Beach is home to a tropical beach paradise called Aqua Wellness Resort, almost hidden among the treetops, where relaxation is combined with a focus on your personal well-being. Yoga, massages, spa treatments and health-conscious, organic, locally sourced and delicious cuisine. Your cabaña has a convenient kitchenette for light beach-friendly meals. A secluded stretch of sand just outside is your private beach, where monkeys may visit your doorstep in the mist of the early mornings.

Day 8-9: Fun at the Beach

With a laid back atmosphere, small-town lifestyle centered on the sea, the following days you might fell like surfing, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, horseback riding, biking, or just simply relaxing on an uncrowded beach, swaying in a hammock, or chatting with locals. Howler monkeys hang in the trees and nesting endangered sea turtles can be seen seasonally. Fresh caught fish is for dinner or other delicacies smoked on the beach.

Day 10: Back home
