Spot: The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch

Zone: Shell, Wyoming

The Good Stuff:

For years the Flitner Ranch, Trapper Creek and The Hideout have practiced rotating grazing. Rotating grazing can be defined as the selective use of grazing to allow the diversity of grasses, plants and herbs that the region offers an opportunity to flourish. Certain areas are grazed, (or not grazed), during various periods of the year to respect different plants flowering times as well as the birds and animals that thrive on these plants during those periods. The lodge and guest ranch are very environmentally aware and strive to be eco-friendly, promote sustainability and use what is available.

What We Love:

The beautiful area, quietness, and amazing views!

Green Cred:

  • They encourage those fishing on the property to use barb-less hooks and to catch and release. In addition they teach their guests the technique of releasing a fish in such away it can survive.
  • The Hideout uses best quality kitchen and table ware and limits disposable items.
  • When disposable items are being used they are made of corn or sugarcane fiber so the compost easily.
  • The Hideout composts or re-uses most of the kitchen left over’s and keeps free roaming chickens to eat the left overs.

  • All glass, tin and cardboard of The Trapper Creek Lodge & Restaurant are re-used.
  • The use of disposable water bottles, cans, etc. are discouraged and every effort is made to pick up all waste we encounter on the range. Guests are educated on how to live the west in a more sustainable way.
  • The restaurant uses fresh vegetables (in season) from their vegetable garden.
  • They are currently looking into the possibilities of using solar and wind energy.

Above and Beyond:

The Hideout constantly invests in ways to protect the environment or minimize the impact. An initiative in 2008 in co-operation with the USDA and Fish and Game resulted in fencing of over a mile of The Trapper Creek to keep cattle from the banks and protect the trout spawning areas.
